 The passing of actor Bernard Hill, who was well-known for his roles in films such as "Titanic" and "The Lord of the Rings." Bernard Hill, 79, played Captain Edward Smith in the 1997 film "Titanic," which won multiple Oscars, and King Théoden in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

Before his famous performances in these films, Hill rose to notoriety for his appearance in the 1982 BBC TV drama "Boys from the Blackstuff." In this series, he played Yosser Hughes, who experienced unemployment issues in Liverpool and struggled to cope, often with limited success.

According to the release, Bernard Hill died early on a Sunday morning, as verified by his agent, Lou Coulson. Hill died while with his fiancée Alison and son Gabriel.

 An homage given by actors Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, and Billy Boyd at Comic Con in Liverpool to their late co-star Bernard Hill, who played King Théoden in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

Sean Astin began the tribute by expressing their admiration for Hill, describing him as brave, humorous, gruff, irascible, and stunning.

Billy Boyd offered a personal story about watching the trilogy with Dominic Monaghan, emphasising Hill's outstanding performance of J.R.R. Tolkien's words. Boyd appreciated Hill's ability to elicit strong emotions, adding that his performances frequently brought him to tears. He also stated that Hill's absence would be sorely felt.

Boyd remembered seeing the trilogy with Monaghan, stating, "I don't think anyone spoke Tolkien's words as well as Bernard did. He'd break my heart. He will be truly missed."

Alan Bleasdale, author of Boys from the Blackstuff, described Hill's death as a "great loss and also a great surprise".

"It was an extraordinary, mesmeric performance; Bernard gave it his all, and you can see it in every scene. "He became Yosser Hughes."



Bernard Hill's future appearance in the BBC drama series "The Responder" is a tribute to his outstanding career. Hill, who is originally from Manchester but now lives in Suffolk, was due to appear in the second season of "The Responder," which stars Martin Freeman and premieres on Sunday.

Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, paid tribute to Hill's long and illustrious career. She praised his extraordinary talent and cited his outstanding parts in a variety of shows, including "Boys from the Blackstuff," "Wolf Hall," and now "The Responder." Salt acknowledged the BBC's appreciation for the opportunity to work with Hill and his condolences to his family during this trying time.

Hill's portrayal of Yosser Hughes, pointed out for his emotional plea "Gizza job" as he suffered with unemployment, was highly praised in "Boys from the Blackstuff". This series gained critical acclaim, receiving a BAFTA for finest Drama Series in 1983 and was named to the British Film Institute's list of the finest television shows ever filmed in 2000.
